Kate Campbell in Georgia

This announcement of a Georgia appearance by Kate Campbell, one of my very favorite singers and songwriters, just came to my attention. It has an unusually good brief description of her music:

Kate Campbell is more often compared to Flannery O’Connor and Eudora Welty than to other singer-songwriters. Maybe it’s her gift for storytelling, or her mythic Southern imagery. Her easygoing stage manner makes you feel like you’re sitting around after supper talking with an old friend. Through seven albums she’s attracted a great supporting cast including Emmylou Harris, Buddy Miller, Guy Clark, and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section!

In February 2003 she was honored by Ballet Memphis, which featured songs from each of Campbell’s albums as well as a live performance by Kate and band at a ballet entitled South of Everywhere.

The theme of race relations runs throughout her albums. Consequently, Kate has performed at the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta and at the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, Alabama.

I attended that Memphis ballet appearance last year, and it was great. I was skeptical as to how the choreographer would come up with performances to go with her songs. But he did a brilliant job of it.

In a world where the music wasn't dominated by the corporate clones of Clear Channel and the like, Kate would be one of the best-known performers in the country.
