California Politics: Schwarzenegger and Gay Marriage (7 of 7)

What are the Dems thinking? The Republican Party just pulled a political coup, people! They ousted a Democratic governor that had been elected less than a year earlier without even the pretense of claiming official misconduct. They need to snap out of this kiss-up-to-Schwarzenegger nonsense, and soon.

He's raising money hand-over-fist. Pay to play, already even more blatantly so that Gray Davis ever did. But in the first civil-rights issue in which he's called on to provide leadership, what does he do? He lies about riots and uses reckless and panicky language to describe the situation.

Here are a few other good links on Schwarzenegger's demogoguery on gay marriage:

I was watching Inside Politics on CNN a couple of days back and they had a big story about the Guv's first 100 days in office, and I was really surprised to hear all the kind words from all the CA Dems. Cruz was about the only one to take a semi-critical stance.

Sounds like a real love-fest out there, and sounds like another GOP trying to appease his conservative base.

The Democrats will be making a real mistake if they don't demand in a very public way that he follow through on his commitment to immigrant drivers licenses. That's a symbolically very important issue for Latino voters. - Bruce

Diane Fienstein is even doing ads for the bond measures Swarzenegger is pushing. His success is due to 1) Ca is in deep trouble and everyone knows it and knows they need to set aside political bickering to save the sate 2) he compromises. Not everything is going the way he wants it to. 3) he's persuasive, he has support from the voters and dems don't want to get voted out for crossing him; 4) dems don't have any better ideas.

It would be good for California and good for the state Republican Party if the pragmatic Schwarzenegger you're seeing turns out to be his prevailing style. But his "riot" comment on the gay marriage issue shows an uglier side of a Schwarzenegger that could wind up playing to the worst instincts of the state Republican Party, which has been in anything but a pragmatic, compromising mood the last few years. - Bruce

His riot comment is not only irresponsible but also manipulative. It's concrete evidence that this man is not above using incendiary rhetoric to bolster his position on issues. There was no need for him to insert himself in this debate. I find it ironic he thought it more important to meddle with this issue rather than trying to fix the grocery strike which has been going on for almost five months.
