Saturday Morning Headlines

I guess it's some sort of good sign that crony capitalism and good-ole-boy government in the Bush Administration still rate as news. Not much of a surprise any more, though.

Halliburton Gets More Iraq Work:  Subsidiary KBR Wins Previously No-Bid Job Washington Post 01/17/04

Gosh, who would have thought?

Nothing to freak out about, though. It's only worth a billion dollars or so.

Cheney Hunting Trip With Scalia Raises Impartiality Questions Los Angeles Times 01/16/04

I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that headline. This is Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia we're talking about here, you know, the one who stopped the vote count in Florida in 2000, saying that if it went against Bush it might be embarassing for him? The thought of "impartiality" from Antonin Scalia is pretty funny.

Vice President Dick Cheney and Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia spent part of last week duck hunting together at a private camp in south Louisiana, just three weeks after the high court agreed to take up the vice president's appeal involving lawsuits over his handling of the administration's energy task force.

I mean, couldn't they at least pretend to be conducting themselves in a business-like way? Of course not. Scalia is strictly from the Roger Taney school or jurisprudence. (That would be Roger Taney of the Dred Scott decision fame.)

Nothing surprises me anymore. I figure the all get together every once in a while to figure out how they can screw the rest of us next! Obviously they don't even care about appearances, I'm afraid that's a sign of how confident there will be no repercussions.

Just the kind of thing that happens when all the normal checks and balances of our government disappear. Where's a special prosecutor when you need one?
