Chuckie Watch 26: Chuckie Gits Responsible About Guns

Ole Chuckie's done got wind of a United Nations plot "to ban private gun ownership."  (Controlling Guns 01/12/04) Chuckie don't tell us where he heard it, but he does say: "I can’t vouch for the validity of the information but I don’t doubt it." That's the guiding principle for hate-radio fans, isn't it? I have no idea if it's true or not, but I believe it anyway?

Chuckie recites standard copy from the Charlton Heston Fan Club canon, telling us, for instance, that in Switzerland, "ex-military people are required to keep a gun. Switzerland’s crime rate is extremely low, despite the massive amount of guns there." But I think his book editors at Regnery Press might want to work this piece over a bit, too. The guns-for-everybody crowd likes to say that crime in low in Switzerland because there are so many guns around. Chuckie just mellowed out a bit too much over the holidays, it seems like.

He does go on to kind of say that: "The real reason that the crime rate is so low is that the Swiss just don’t put up with crime. They simply will not tolerate it. We could learn a lesson from them." Since he's already told us he ain't gone let facts trouble him too much on the whole subject, you have to wonder why he sounds cagey on this topic. Maybe because he wants to argue that Swiss restrictions on immigration are also one of the lessons he wants us to learn from them? (The idea of Chuckie studying Switzerland as a model for America is pretty amusing.)

Just for kicks, I did a Google search for "United Nations ban private gun ownership," and the closest hits were articles from mid-2001, expressing alarm over UN efforts to reduce international traffic in small arms, including one article by long-time rightwing battle-axe Phyllis Schlafly. Chuckie must have been going through old magazines or something and came across that story.
