Senator Byrd Still Shooting Straight on Iraq

Don't miss Robert Byrd's recent comments on US troop levels in Iraq.

Byrd is turning out to be one of the Democrats' ablest critics of Bush and Rummy's splendid little adventure in Iraq. Here's part of what Byrd had to say:

[I]f we are to rely primarily on the active duty Army to carry out the occupation of Iraq while maintaining our presence in Korea, Afghanistan, the Balkans, and elsewhere, we can only maintain 38,000 to 64,000 soldiers in Iraq and Kuwait over the long term.

Currently, we are using around 140,000 troops to occupy Iraq.

To carry out the grand schemes of the hawks like Rumsfeld and Paul Wolfowitz, a big increase in the size of the Army will be required, though Rummy seems to be still operating on the idea that we can somehow magically do it will much smaller commitment of troops.
