Mississippi and Bush

Now, this is Republican flack Robert Novak speaking, the guy who enabled the outing of CIA officer Valerie Plame for cheap political payback.  But still, it's interesting (A 'Surge' Faces Trouble In the Senate Washington Post 01/01/07):

Even in Mississippi, the reddest of red states, where Bush's approval rating has just inched above 50 percent, Republicans see no public support for more troops.

Is Mississippi really "the reddest [most Republican] of red states"?  I don't have the statistics at hand.  But despite their two reactionary Senators, torture supporter Trent Lott and even more hardcore torture supporter Thad Cochrane, two out of their four Congressional Representatives are Democrats.

An earlier poll this year on the Iraq War showed that opposition was as strong in Southern states as in the country generally.
