The Christmas Day killing in southern Mississippi is still an open case (Biloxi [MS] Sun-Herald 12/29/03). The Mississippi Highway Patrol, at least in the person of Sergeant Joe Gazzo who still seems to be the main spokesperson on the case, is taking a disturbingly unconvincing position on the case:
"I don't think I've seen a car shot up as bad as that car in my (24 year) career," Gazzo said Sunday. "The true miracle is that more (people) were not killed. There's no rhyme or reason to this. This may be just a violent person looking to take his anger out on an innocent person. It may be a plot we don't understand yet. Our criminal investigation team is trying ... to put those pieces together."
Whatever else it was, the facts as described in the press make this an organized killing. The victim may have been chosen partially at random, rather than particular individuals being sought out. But the idea that the perp was "a violent person," i.e., a single individual acting alone, when according to the Highway Patrol's own account the incident involved two different cars communicating and coordinating with each other, seems ridiculous on the face of it.
