Britney's first marriage has, of course, already entered the realm of legend. Salon's gossip columnist Amy Reiter thinks that Boo and her ex-husband Jason "may have set a new record for celebrity quickie marriages."
The Las Vegas Review-Journal of 01/05/06 has a facsimile of the official annulment decree, in which the district court of Clark County, Nevada, finds that "there are no minor children, either adopted by the parties or the issue of this marriage, and Plaintiff Spears is not currently pregnant." So just lay off that rumor before it starts, you Yankee cynics! Yes, I know you were thinking it.
There was no community property, community debts or spousal support involved. The legal grounds for the divorce was based on the finding that "there was no meeting of the minds in entering into this marriage contract" and also because:
Plaintiff Spears lacked understanding of her actions to the extent that she was capable of agreeing to the marriage because before entering into the marriage the Plaintiff and Defendant did not know each others likes and dislikes, each others desires to have or not have children, and each others desires as to State of residency. Upon learning of each others desires, they are so incompatible that there was a want of understanding of each others actions in entering into this marriage.
The accompanying news article includes a statement from Boo's attorney that "the two were under the mistaken impression that they wouldn't be legally married unless they returned to the Clark County Marriage Bureau and formally filed their license and certificate of marriage with the court" after the wedding ceremony.
A facsimile of the marriage license is also available online at Yahoo! Entertainment.
