When wingnuts get desperate

The Republican hysteria over the Mark Foley scandal is kind of amazing.  They could have jumped on this by saying they were reviewing their dealings with him to make sure complaints about Foley were properly followed up by the responsible House members and employees.  It still would have been a sticky problem and a very embarassing one.

But now the Republicans' Mighty Wurlitzer is spewing out a variety of defenses to see which ones will stick to the wall.  It's the Democrats' fault!  It's the Liberal Media's fault!  No, it's that sinister Jewish conspirator George Soros!  No, it's a secret cabal of gay Republican staffers!

It's pretty pitiful.  Though it is interesting to hear that the Republicans have so many gay staffers.  Who knew?

Joe Conason sums up the mess pretty well in The gang that couldn't talk straight WorkingforChange.com 10/05/06:

Appearing on the radio with Rush Limbaugh, the Speaker [Denny Hastert] even attempted to blame the Democrats for bringing up the Foley matter, insinuating that his political adversaries had withheld evidence of the Congressman's sexual predations for three years. His friends at the Wall Street Journal editorial page insist that fear of being perceived as "gay-bashers" inhibited a serious investigation by the Republican leaders (who instead spent much of last summer warning that gay marriage would mean the end of Western civilization). ...

The truth about this matter - and many other issues of far broader significance - will never be known until these dissemblers and their enablers are removed from power.
