Torture in the Bush Gulag: The veto threat

"I wouldn't join the International Criminal Court. It's a body based in The Hague where unaccountable judges and prosecutors can pull our troops or diplomats up for trial.

"And I wouldn't join it. And I understand that in certain capitals around the world that that wasn't a popular move. But it's the right move not to join a foreign court that could -- where our people could be prosecuted." - George W. Bush 09/30/04

"Men without conscience are capable of any cruelty the human mind can imagine." - Dick Cheney 01/26/05

So, Bush is threatening to veto the defense bill with the anti-torture provision that would outlaw torture yet again: Bush will veto anti-torture law after Senate revolt by Francis Harris Daily Telegraph (UK) 10/10/05.

Maybe Bush's fine Christian Right allies like James Dobson and Richard John Neuhaus will start a quick lobbying campaign to demand that Bush stand up for Christian values, sign the new anti-torture bill, and start obeying that one and all the other anti-torture laws already on the books.

We'll see.
