German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer spoke Monday (01/24/05) at the UN's recognition ceremony for the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops on January 27, 1945. Millionen Menschen sind dem monströsen, kaltblütig geplanten Massenmord der Nazis zum Opfer gefallen: Jüdinnen und Juden – vor allem sie, aber auch Sinti und Roma, Homosexuelle, Behinderte, Kriegsgefangene, Oppositionelle und viele andere Menschen aus ganz Europa.
Sie wurden in Auschwitz, Treblinka, Sobibor, Majdanek und anderen Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslagern auf deutschen Befehl und durch Deutsche barbarisch gequält, durch Zwangsarbeit oder pseudo-medizinische Experimente brutal ermordet, exekutiert und vergast. ...
Auschwitz war der furchtbarste Ausdruck eines vom Rassenwahn verblendeten Systems. Die rassistische Ideologie Nazi-Deutschlands führte auch in einen verbrecherischen Vernichtungskrieg gegen Polen, die Sowjetunion und andere Länder. Er brachte entsetzliches Leid über die Menschen dort.
Als Symbol für Menschenverachtung und Völkermord wird Auschwitz für immer in die Geschichte der Menschheit und die Geschichte meiner Nation eingeschrieben sein. Und Auschwitz steht gleichzeitig für das entsetzliche Vorhaben der Nazis, das deutsche und europäische Judentum mit Hilfe einer industriell betriebenen Vernichtungsmaschinerie vollständig auszulöschen. Sechs Millionen Jüdinnen und Juden sind ihr zum Opfer gefallen – Männer, Frauen und Kinder. ...
Dieses barbarische Verbrechen wird für immer Teil der deutschen Geschichte sein. Es bedeutete für mein Land den absoluten moralischen Tiefpunkt, einen Zivilisationsbruch ohne Beispiel. Das neue, das demokratische Deutschland hat die Lehren daraus gezogen. Es ist von der historisch-moralischen Verantwortung für Auschwitz tief geprägt.
