State of things in Iraq, short version

Judy Woodruff had a piece of unusual news on the PBS Newshour for 03/09/07: "In Baghdad today, Iraq Prime Minister Al-Malaki ventured out into the city."

The Prime Minister "ventures" out into his capital city. And that's news. That pretty much tells us how things stand in Iraq, doesn't it?

Also on the same Newshour edition,
David Brooks:

But the fact is, there's a surge going on now, and we'll probably know by summer whether it's working or not. And if it's not working, then everybody will want to get out.
"By summer" would be the third week in June, I believe. Will Brooks call for withdrawal if it's not working? But, then, in postmodern Republicanism you can just declare whatever's happening as "working". That's how goofy the discussion of the war has become among the Republicans. Come to think of it, though, it has pretty much always been that goofy.
