Jerry Brown on current threats to the Constitution

In the fundraising appeal currently on the opening screen of his Brown for Attorney General campaign site, www.JerryBrown.org, former California governor and current Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown says:

Let me be clear. These are dangerous times. Our former U.S. attorney general declared whole classes of people outside the protection of law. Basic guarantees of the Fourth and Sixth Amendments are threatened. President Bush is under pressure to appease fundamentalists with Supreme Court appointees who will repeal Roe vs. Wade. As California’s attorney general, my commitment will be to defend—vigorously—our basic constitutional values. Long experience in state and local government prepares me for this kind of challenge.

Both my father and Earl Warren served as California’s attorney general and are giants in political history because they put principle above politics and believed that each person was equal before the law. That’s my philosophy as well.

It's worth noting that although Brown has no problem at all talking about religious faith and public policy, he's also not afraid to overtly opposed fundamentalists who want to abolish women's right to choose on abortion.

Since there has been some comment recently about undisclosed campaign backing for blogs, let me take this opportunity to say that I support Jerry Brown for California Attorney General and I have contributed money to his campaign.  His campaign does not contribute money to me and I have no formal connection with the campaign.
