Yes, Britney Spears got married! Once again, Little Boo defies the Yankee cynics and the callous skeptics of the press, shattering the conventional paradigm, using traditional forms to direct our collective gaze beyond the narrow confines of our encrusted worldviews and to expose the hollowness of decadent structures that fail to assimilate the dynamic potentials of life.
A postmodern artistic revolutionary who's still a down-home girl from Louisiana at heart! That's reason to be optimistic about the future (recent communications from God to Pat Robertson notwithstanding).
For those of you who slept late Sunday, here's the story from People.com, and from the Las Vegas Review Journal by Norm Clarke (Surprise! Britney ties the knot). Der Spiegel provides the most appropriate visuals ("Ein Scherz, der zu weit gegangen ist"). It shows a range of images, from Boo the "Unschuld vom Lande" (innocent country girl) to Boo the performer, Boo the classic model, and Boo the postmodern bride smooching with Madonna, that suggest the larger cultural significance of this event.
Norm Clarke, after refuting more frivolous Yankee slander that Britney had to be carried out of a Vegas club drunk, notes that last Thursday at the Rain club in Vegas, she "had the crowd buzzing about her behavior when she was spotted kissing one of her female dancers - smooches that made her infamous Madonna liplock look tame." After this (premarital) public display, the fact that she encouraged immediate speculation about whether the marriage might be annulled illustrates her radical approach to jarring the public into rethinking traditional assumptions about marriage. Let's not forget that the King married Priscilla in Vegas, too.
For those Europeans skeptical about Americans' general sensibility, I ask you: what other country could have produced such a daring, innovative postmodern artist as Britney Spears?

Wow, finally some really important news...
Just kidding, I'm in the process of trying to come up with a list of my "guilty pleasures" for a future journal entry. Celebrity gossip will have to be in there somewhere!
Boy, this is why I don't "blog." I would write a longer retort, but, I have to go have a couple of teeth pierced for jewelry.

Being more alert today, I see I missed the point of your piece completely. At the time, I was thinking "If I read one more story about Britney..." Please feel free to delete my inane comment of yesterday :)
It seems kind of odd that Britney can get married as a joke and get an annulment a day or two later, but gay marriages are somehow a threat to this sacred institution???
Re fdtate's comment: Like I said, it's her radical approach to jarring the public into rethinking traditional assumptions about marriage. :) - Bruce
