But then everyone knows that Rush Limbaugh is a bigot and a junkie. I mean, they don't call him Mr. Oxycontin for nothing, now do they?
Bush was holding forth on the torture issue (summary from Media Matters):
CALLER: It was like a college fraternity prank that stacked up naked men --
LIMBAUGH: Exactly. Exactly my point! This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation and we're going to ruin people's lives over it and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time. You know, these people are being fired at every day. I'm talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release? You of heard of need to blow some steam off?
He went on to blame Britney Spears for it. I guess we can't be too hard on him though. If you have your brain pickled in chemicals, it can make strange things come out of your mouth.
Did I mention that President Bush considers pill-popping Rush a "national treasure"?

I never listen to Rush on the radio...I don't like getting only one side of an argument! But I did hear some clip of his show on the news. It wasn't the one you mention, but it was definitely along those same lines.
I was quite surprised to hear him laugh it off as nothing and "innocent" fun. Given the outrage it has caused, and the potential added danger it has put our troops in from those Iraqis who might try to attack out of some kind of revenge, I can't imagine anyone thinking there's no reason for concern.

I suppose Ann Coulter will have a similar take on it. I really wish the sheeple that listen to these monsters would take the time to really ask themselves a pertinent question.......WHY AM I TAKING UP VALUBLE SPACE AND BREATHING AIR THAT WAS MEANT FOR HUMAN?

It's very important to remember that Rush Limbaugh, Oxycontin and all, is *not* a fringe phenomenon in the Republican Party. The President's press secretary was asked specifically if the President would disassociate himself from Rush's comments, and he didn't. Now, it's obvious that Bush's official public statements are very different from this.
But no one should kid themselves about how it works. Rush and the lesser Oxycontin crowd put out this stuff to fire up the base - and they're justifying tortore and sadism with this stuff. While the respectables stonewall and profess horror while they try to limit the scope of accountability, Rush and the like are throwing out the red meat for the Republican base: torturing Iraqis is good, supporting our troops means supporting torture.
The Bush White House has no problems distancing itself from positions that Republican John McCain takes. The Bush I Administration had no problem distancing itself from David Duke when he was running for the Senate in Louisiana as a Republican. With pro-torture pill-popper Rush, Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld are happy to be guests on his show. And Bush II calls him a "national treasure."
If Bush and Karl Rove wanted Rush to shut up with this, the message would go out there loud and clear. They don't. They know this is what the part of the base who thrive on apocalyptic Christian Right prophecies, who support neo-Confederate hoo-ha, or who back racist organization like the White Citizens Council - whose support Haley Barbour welcomed in his campaign last year for Mississippi governor - want to hear. In today Republican Party, Rush and his pro-torture rants are welcome. - Bruce
