What would Bennett do?

That question came to my mind when I read this story: Alleged offensive remarks may set back Hinds drug court by Jimmie E. Gates Jackson Clarion-Ledger 10/09/05.

Hinds County Justice Court Judge Nicki Boland's proposed misdemeanor drug court could soon accept participants, but some county officials are concerned about inappropriate and offensive remarks she allegedly made at a meeting last month.

A drug court program diverts a person with misdemeanor drug and alcohol charges to a treatment program instead of jail. Drug courts have become a trend nationally to decrease recidivism among criminals, save money and keep individuals in treatment longer.

During a breakout session at the National Drug Court Institute Conference in Dallas, drug court planning committee members and others from Hinds County said an agitated Boland commented at one point "All you African Americans can go to hell."

William Bennett and hiss defenders would no doubt explain that she was just expressed her religious beliefs and explaining in the spirit of Christian love that sinners could suffer eternal punishment.  After all, she said they can go to Hail, not that shewanted them to.

Then the defenders could attack her critics for "playing the race card."

It's interesting to see that, based on the last paragraph I quoted, the quotation was reported by at least four sources.  But the headline refers to an "alleged" remark.
