How cold does it get in Canada? Just wondering.
There's a Canadian Web site out there called Marry An American. I don't know whether it's a real dating service or a spoof. Or, heck, it could be one of those I-inherited-money-from-an-African-dictator type scams, I don't know. But the headline they have up is pretty good: "No good American will be left behind!" It's nice to know that we still have friends in the democratic world.
Katharine Mieszkowski at Salon's War Room '04 blog notes of this slogan: "Gives new meaning to the coalition of the willing."
My wife's first reaction to the news that Kerry had conceded was that she wanted to put the house on the market, pack up our stuff and move to Europe. She's an Austrian citizen, so we could get work permits in any European Union country. Could be interesting.
Kevin Berger at the same Salon.com blog has been talking to a Canadian immigration attorney, David Cohen, whose business looks to be picking up soon. Apparently, it's not that difficult for Americans with a college education and no criminal record to immigrate to Canada. And, according to Berger, there is reason to think Canada would welcome more American immigrants:
Interestingly, not many Americans decide to remake their lives in Canada. In 2002, only 5,288 Yankees immigrated there, compared to 14,164 folks from Pakistan. However, Cohen says his business among Americans has picked up considerably in the past year. He's received numerous calls from "parents who have lived through the Vietnam era and now have children soon to be draft age."
Hey, they've got a multi-party democracy with honest and competitive elections, a single-payer health-care system, a prosperous economy, a press that's not afraid to be critical of the government: how bad could it be? Of course, it might require some adjustments. But then, so would doing a stint in Iraq, or learning to pledge allegiance to Dear Leader Bush.
Actually, I think I would prefer Berlin. Germany is especially dedicated to democratic principles and the rule of law, both domestically and internationally. Potsdam could be a pretty nice place to live. In fact, it seems to be getting trendy right now. Live in Potsdam, commute to work in Berlin, go for hikes on the weekend on the grounds of Frederick's the Great's old residence at Sans-Souci. Hey, works for me.

Can I hitch a ride?
My God you people, things aren't as bleak as you paint them. But if you really want to leave don't let the door hit you in butt. I can pretty much guaranty our life would have been worse off if Kerry some how could have won the election.
After all we survived an economic recession which was created by Bill Clinton and now our economy is growing at a strong pace and jobs are being created in this country. Despite the attempts by the Democrats and John Kerry to paint a doom and gloom outlook if George Bush is elected nearly 59,000,000 Americans saw that Bush was the (right) man for the job and (left) Kerry by the way side.
I hope we don't have to listen to all this whining for the next for years until the next election.

Don't worry, Mrdad3, *listening* to what the reality-based part of the community has to say doesn't seem to be a problem that much affects Bush fans. - Bruce
